We are extremely thankful for all the rain we have received this week. The cattle have done very well so far this spring and summer. We have gotten our farm ground chiseled and are getting a planting schedule ready for winter wheat. As with anything farm/ranch related, we have to be flexible and ready to work around the weather conditions. Our goal is to drill wheat the last week of August. Wheat is our main forage for growing cattle. 80% of the weight gained by the calves during the year comes from grazing on wheat pasture. Wheat has a growing season of about 8-9 months and is in the vegetative state for roughly 7 of those months. It goes dormant December through February but is still able to be grazed. Wheat is a major part of our operation and we always look forward to planting and getting the cattle ready to go. It is never too early to get on the list for beef! We possibly have one spot left for our March 2021 date but don’t worry! Our May 2021 butcher still has plenty of spots. We know that this seems to be pretty far in advance but with the current situation people are reserving their beef earlier and earlier. Most processors are currently booking for early Fall 2021. All that has to be done to reserve a portion of beef is to let us know the amount (half or full), send us a good phone number, grass or grain finished, and which date. We take deposits 4 months before the processing date and will send reminders. We would love the opportunity to provide your family with high quality, locally raised and processed beef!
